Mission
Our mission is to unite people through folklore in an amusing and comprehensible way – a combination of dance and games.
Taratanci is the creator of a method for visually representing Bulgarian folk dances through graphic figures of their steps. Each dance has its own authentic and unique figure.
Due to its universal elements, this graphic dance language can be applied to visualize the folk dances of other nations as well, which creates a unique foundation for building understanding and continuity between different cultures.
Awards & Achievements
History
In 2014, a group of young people tested whether they could “draw” folk dance steps in a park and invite passersby to dance by following the outlines. They used different chalk for left and right feet, numbered the steps, and successfully taught strangers to dance.
This is how Taratanci was born – an organization dedicated to preserving Bulgarian folk dances through visual step graphics. After the official launch, professional folk dancer Nikolay Korchev joined the team, helping create a universal dance “language.”
Over three years, the team created graphic figures for 34 dances, presented in the traveling exhibition “Follow the Steps” across Bulgaria and abroad. In 2022, they collected footprints from over 100 additional dances across all ethnographic regions of Bulgaria, digitally preserving more than 130 traditional Bulgarian folk dances. Today they continue collecting footprints from all over the country.
Taratanci offers folkloric gifts, corporate team-building programs, children’s educational programs, the traveling exhibition “Follow the Steps”, a podcast with folklore stories, and the first mobile augmented reality game where users point their phone at the ground and follow dance steps appearing on the screen.
In 2021, Taratanci received the European Heritage Award “Europa Nostra” for their significant contribution to preserving Bulgarian cultural heritage.
